Shuttle Breeding

Shuttle Breeding System

’s Cereal Breeding Program is based on the concept that large amounts of genetic variability within each end-use cereal grain class must be generated and maintained.

To achieve maximum efficiency and effectiveness in developing varieties for worldwide adaptation, large numbers of diverse plants must be available for crossing and exploitation.
  • The "Shuttle Breeding System" between nurseries around the world ensures this genetic variability.
  • Research nursery planting in both Hemispheres ensures two (2) generations of crops per year.
  • Utilizing plant nurseries in the Southern and Northern Hemispheres permits faster varietal development and allows for broadening of the adaptability of the  selected varieties under different disease pressures and drought conditions.
